Hale/P200 Telescope Cover Sheet – Semester

Context: This Hale/P200 Telescope Cover Sheet shall be used by proposers from all P200 constituencies requesting classically-scheduled Hale Telescope observations. Some aspects of this form relate only to Caltech proposers. This form is designed exclusively for use on desktop computers.

Instructions: Fill in the required information. Most field titles have context and/or popup help text that is displayed on mouse hover. When finished, save the form on your computer as a PDF document (click the PRINT button to open the print dialog box on your computer, then save the form as a PDF) to be merged with the cover sheet and the discussion section of your proposal.

Our solicitation forms are evolving to add features and hopefully streamline program specification and proposal preparation. The forms are extensively tested with the Chrome browser on multiple platforms, and tested to a lesser extent with Safari and Firefox and Edge.

Some known, browser-specific issues::

  1. Safari may not invoke the print dialog correctly more than once using the PRINT button. In that circumstance we recommend using the browser print command (File→Print).
  2. Firefox does not clear/reset the form properly on refresh. To reset the form to its proper initial state use shift + refresh.
  3. Internet Explorer is not supported and its use is not recommended for these solicitation forms.

Use the COO Feedback page to report other issues or share your feedback on this form.

Observing Runs and Instruments

Fill in the table below to specify the instruments requested and your preferred/acceptable observing runs.

  • Select the instrument(s) you are requesting for the block from the pull-down menus. Requests for two simultaneous instrument setups must be justified in the proposal discussion (template section 2.1).
  • Enter the number of nights you are requesting for the block.
  • Specify your observing run preferences as P = Preferred or A = Acceptable
  • Use multiple request lines if you want your observing time split into two or more blocks (one line for each block, use buttons to add/delete blocks as needed).
  • To facilitate planning we provide approximate local sidereal time (LST) at Palomar sunset and sunrise (astronomical/18° twilight) for each run. (Use TOGGLE LST button to toggle visibility).
  • Lunar cycle description:
