---+ Sidewalk Astronomy

It's surprising but true that planets and other bright astronomical targets can be observed from portable telescopes in the light-polluted skies of Pasadena, even when sitting directly below street lights.  Colorado Boulevard provides a perfect venue on weekends for sidewalk astronomy with lots of foot traffic and so close to Caltech.  We will also try going to other streets with lots of passersby like Hollywood Blvd and Santa Monica Pier. 

We just set up the telescopes after sunset with a good view of the ecliptic.  We bring the 6" and 8" telescopes, eyepieces, and some swag and schedule flyers.  Then just offer views of the Moon or planets to passersby like a carnival barker.  Make sure to say the event is "free" and sponsored by Caltech and JPL so people know you're legit.  Some people will walk past, but many people will stop, and it's a super fun time.
