The Caltech Core-Collapse Program (CCCP)

The Caltech Core-Collapse Project (CCCP) is a large observational program designed to use the Palomar robotic 60" and Hale 200" telescopes to obtain optical photometry, spectroscopy and IR photometry of ~50 nearby core-collapse SNe. The program is designed to provide a complete sample of core-collapse events, with well-defined selection criteria, uniform, high-quality optical/IR observations, as well as radio and X-ray light curves for some events. We will use this sample to characterize the little-studied properties of core-collapse SNe as a population. The sample will be used as a comparison set for for studies of SNe associated with Gamma-Ray Bursts, to promote and calibrate the use of SNe II-P for cosmography, and set the stage for investigations of SNe at high-z using coming space missions such as SNAP and JWST.

The main CCCP sample is comprised of all nearby SNe (R mag < 18.5), visible from Palomar, which are discovered young (defined as having a reported non-detection no more than 30 days prior to discovery). Some of the benefits in studying young events are discussed by Gal-Yam et al. (2004)

Additional CCCP targets include all nearby type Ib/c SNe (i.e., even those not discovered young) as part of a complete radio/optical study of SNe Ib/c (lead by A. Soderberg), SNe II-P discovered by the Palomar-QUEST type II SN search (a Yale-Caltech-LBL collaboration), and SNe which are followed in the UV by HST (in support of the large cycle 13 HST program, PI Filippenko) and GALEX (cycle 1 GI program, PI Gal-Yam).
