This SN was discovered by the Texas group

(IAUC 8460)</a> on Dec 28, 2004, and absent on December 20, 2004, 
so discovered rather young.<br>

<a href="http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/oir/Research/supernova/spectra/sn2004gy-20050110.flm.gif">
Spectroscopy</a> by the CfA group shows this is a type II event.<br>
<br>
The host galaxy is anonymous, at z=0.0269 (CfA).<br>
