Astro 154 = Galactic and Extragalactic Astronomy, Winter 1989 Part II. Extragalactic Astronomy. An updated course outline, and the partial literature list. -------------------------------------------------------------- Week 7 (Feb. 20, 21, 22): Variation of properties along the Hubble seq. Manifold of galaxies, parameter correlations, scaling laws, distance indicators. Week 8 (Feb. 27, 28, Mar. 1): Galaxy clusters. X-ray gas. Large-scale distribution of matter. Correlations, topology, environmental effects. Week 9 (Mar. 6,7,8): Elements of galaxy evolution. Mergers and starbursts. IRAS galaxies. Active galactic nuclei (phenomenology, mostly). Not much to read in MB, but try chap. 5, and 8-4. Some galaxy evolution in BT chap. 9, but the empirical aspects covered are already obsolete. The best thing to do is look at the recent review papers. There is a large number of relevant reviews in ARAA and PASP, on the list you got earlier. Check out also PASP issues #600 (Feb. 1986) and #633 (Nov. 1988). These books may be particularly useful: Saas-Fee course "Galaxies", Freeman, Larson, and Tinsley. Geneva Observatory (1976). [Fairly obsolete by now, but a good general intro.] Saas-Fee course "Morphology and Dynamics of Galaxies", Binney, Kormendy, and White. Geneva Observatory (1982). Saas-Fee course "Large Scale Structure in the Universe", Fabian, Geller, and Szalay. Geneva Observatory (1988). PASP Conf. Suppl. 5, "The Minnesota Lectures on Clusters of Galaxies and Large-Scale Structure", ed. Dickey (1988). More conference proceedings on the next page. Mind you, this is not a complete list, just what I think is the best recent stuff. Many of these will be useful for the cosmology course, so save these notes.
