The struggles of pioneers is similar to the first encounter of the
student with a subject. It therefore follows that a neophyte would
benefit from understanding the history of the development of a
field. The first detection of a fine structure line of astronomical
value and interest was [OIII] 88 micron line by the Cornell group
led by
Martin
Harwit. I took the occasion to talk to Martin on the eve of
preparing for this class. Martin was not only a pioneering astronomer
but also a scientist and citizen of great intellect (cf. Cosmic
Discovery). An earnest tyro would benefit from reading the
history of this important field of ISM in the words and presentation
of the leader: MartinHarwit.email.
Harwit's recounting of the
First Decade of FSL astronomy and the associated notes,
Heidelberg_Harwit_2015_Notes.pdf. The program of the 2015 Heidelberg
workshop is Heidelberg_2015_FSL_Workshop.pdf. Despite his amazing
accomplishments Martin was not well recognized -- not uncommon.
Some scientists are very good at leveraging their modest achievements
to great recognitions, some are naive or do not have supportive
colleagues (cf. Zwicky).
