COO Travel Support Information

Keck Travel Support

In accordance with the recommendation of the Observatory Council (Nov 8, 2005), the Caltech Optical Observatories will NOT pay for travel for faculty or postdocs with their own travel budgets.

Faculty can choose how many people to send on each observing trip, and seek cheaper fares by booking early.

Caltech/Robinson is now an approved remote Keck site, enabling observations with no observer present in Hawaii. Connections & equipment will be moved (in Feb) to 02 as the new remote observing room.

People awarded observing time on Keck who cannot cover their travel costs will:
  • email the Director [srk@astro.caltech.edu] cc: Robert Brucato [brucato@astro.caltech.edu] and request support to cover their travel costs
  • applications reviewed by the Director may be granted partial support up to:
  • $800 for a single night run,
  • $900 for a 2-night run, or
  • $1000 for a 3-night run, including accomodation etc.

    Additionally:

  • The observing project must be a Caltech program. No support will be provided for Caltech observers collaborating with a PI from another institution.
  • Support will be provided for one person per observing run. The person supported must be formally affiliated with Caltech. Collaborators from other institutions are not eligible.
