Event Type: Lecture and Stargazing
Title: How to Prepare for the Great American Eclipse of 2017
Lecturer: Erika Hamden
Position: Postdoctoral Fellow
Institution: Caltech
Abstract:
On August 21st, 2017, a solar eclipse will be visible across the entire continental United States, the first time since 1979. This exciting event is not to be missed. Historically, solar eclipses were believed to be portents of doom or harbingers of miracles. While you have nothing to fear in 2017, the eclipse will certainly be an amazing experience. I'll explain why solar eclipses happen and what we can learn from them today. I'll also discuss how to ensure that you'll see this one and how long you'll have to wait for the next one.
