Solar Eclipse Viewing

The "Great American Solar Eclipse" will occur the morning of Monday, August 21, 2017. While Pasadena will not have views of Totality, it will get a good partial eclipse cover up to ~70% of the solar disc. Obviously, many of us will be traveling to the center line to observe the total solar eclipse, but hopefully we'll still manage to be able to hold an event here on campus for those volunteers remaining.

We have telescopes with solar filters on them, about 800 pairs of solar eclipse glasses, and we may have an H-alpha solar telescope as well. We should be able to make some simple pinhole cameras to project the view of the sun to larger audiences.

My guess is that there will be a big furor about the eclipse in the weeks leading up to it, and if we advertise an event, we will have 200-1000 attendees who will show up for it, so I would like to be prepared. Please consider signing up to help staff the event if you will be around, as staffing should be relatively simple (hand out glasses, talk about what is happening, answer questions, etc.)

Event Schedule

  • Set up for event: 8:30AM
  • Penumbra Entry: 9:07AM
  • Penumbra Maximum 10:16AM
  • Penumbra Exit: 11:45AM
  • Clean up: 12:00AM
