Event Type: Lecture and Stargazing
Title: Galaxies are Cosmic Magnets
Lecturer: Gina Panopoulou
Position: Hubble Fellow
Institution: Caltech
Abstract:
Did you know that galaxies have something in common with fridge magnets? Galaxies generate magnetism! But they do so in a very different way. What does galactic magnetism look like? Where does it come from and what cool phenomena does it produce? We’ll see how scientists use supernovae, space dust and polarized glasses to answer these questions and learn about this mysterious property of the Galaxy.
