Makee: Description of Output Files

Flow chart of the input and output files.

In most of the files below, "-###" is the frame (or observation) number of the object file exposure. For example, frame number 34 would be "-034" and the object spectrum file would be "Flux-034.fits".

Result Files (more info)
Type ( filename ) Description
Object Spectrum (Flux-###.fits) Contains spectrum of object in 2-D format (each row is an echelle order).
Error Spectrum (Err-###.fits) Contains (one sigma) formal error spectrum for the object.
Sky Spectrum (Sky-###.fits) Contains the nightsky or background spectrum.
Flat Field Spectrum (Flat-###.fits) Contains the spectrum of the (rescaled) flat field (quartz lamp) exposure.
Signal-to-Noise Spectrum (s2n-###.fits) Contains the signal-to-noise (one sigma) per pixel corresponding to the object spectrum.
Digital Number Spectrum (DN-###.fits) Contains the count level spectrum for the object.

Verification Files
Type ( filename ) Description
Log file ( hires####.log ) Standard output from makee. Reports status of reductions and any errors, warnings, or notes. Example.
Trace plots ( trace-###.ps ) Shows polynomial fits to the echelle order traces (row vs. column). Example ... (PS) . (more info)
Object profile plots ( profiles-###.ps ) Shows the profile of the object in each order in the spatial direction. Example ... (PS) . (more info)
Skyline shift plots (Flux-###-skyshift.ps) Shows the residuals of the wavelength scale shift to night-sky-lines. (more info)
Final Residuals ( Arc-###-fr.ps ) Shows each the residual of each arcline relative to the fit. Example ... (PS) .
Correlation Functions ( Arc-###-cf.ps ) Shows the correlation used to identify the shift of the arclamp relative to the archival database of arclamps. Example ... (PS) .
Residuals Table ( Arc-###.res ) A table of the residuals for the wavelength scale fit to each echelle order. Example.

Checklist for verifying success of reductions for an observing run:

  1. Search for "ERROR" strings (case insensitive) in .log files. (more info)
  2. Search for "WARNING" strings (case insensitive) in .log files. (more info)
  3. Search for "NOTE" strings (case insensitive) in .log files. (more info)
  4. View trace-###.ps PostScript plot files. (more info)
  5. View profiles-###.ps PostScript plot files. (more info)
  6. View Flux-###-skyshift.ps PostScript plot files. (more info)
  7. Look at Arc-###.res ASCII text table files. (more info)
  8. View Arc-###-fr.ps PostScript plot files.
  9. Check that number of "OBJT" and "STAR" image types listed in "image.list" files matches number of "Flux-###.fits" files produced.
  10. Check "Flux-###.fits" files against hand written log sheets.
  11. Look at spectra for any anomalies. Check very bright stars (e.g. SAO stars) for problems with full extraction mode (mode=4), usually around the A and B bands.
